To find the Greenbelt Office in Blydenburgh Park: from Route 25-25A in Smithtown, go south on Brooksite Dr.; at next light (New Mill Rd.), turn right to park entrance at end of road. From Route 347, find

Brooksite Dr. between the 347-454 junction and Rt. 111; head north on Brooksite to New Mill Rd.; go left to the park. Follow the paved path at the west end of the lot to the Blydenburgh-Weld House.

IMPORTANT:

The first line of each listing includes TIME, DISTANCE, PACE, and TERRAIN, in that order.

"Info" means no reservation is necessary; call only if you need further information.

"CALL" means you must call the leader to reserve a space on the hike.

Each Greenbelt member, guest, or non-member participant agrees to accept personal responsibility for his or her safety and the safety of minors accompanying such persons. The Greenbelt cannot ensure the safety of any participant on hikes or activities. In participating in Greenbelt activities, each such person agrees to hold harmless and free from blame the activity leaders and the Greenbelt, its officers, directors, and members, for any accident, injury, or illness which might be sustained from participating in hikes or other Greenbelt activities.

There's no better way to end the year than with a leisurely stroll at the south end of the L.I. Trail; meet at east end of Field 8, Heckscher St. Park. (end of S. St. Parkway; if Field 8 is closed, use Field 7, just west); bring flashlight; heavy rain or ice cancels.


Wed. Jan. 1 – NEW YEAR’S DAY EARLY MORNING WAKE-UP:

Wed. Jan. 1 - HITHER WOODS IN THE NEW YEAR:

Noon – 10 to 12+ miles – fast – varied – Info: Rick, .

Start the year with a rigorous hike in the deep winter beauty of one of Long Island's largest and most secluded natural areas—Montauk's Hither Woods; hike through rolling woods of oak and mountain laurel to a wild and beautiful coastline; bring proper winter wear, plus snacks and liquids; be prepared to finish at dusk—or later!  Hike is NOT cancelled by snow, wind, or rain.  Meet at Town of East Hampton's Montauk Recycling Center, north side of Route 27 (Montauk Point State Pkwy.), two miles east of the Hither Hills Overlook parking area.

Walk the beautiful upland pine barrens of Brookhaven State Park; meet at southwest corner of Shoreham-Wading River H.S. lot, NY 25A, just east of William. Floyd Parkway; rain or heavy snow cancels.

Thurs. Jan. 16 – STUMP POND WEEKDAY WALK:

Winter is a good time to walk around the scenic pond in the middle of Blydenburgh Park; meet at our Office (directions at top of schedule); rain or bad footing cancels; bring snack and liquid.

An evening outing in Terrell River County Park in Center Moriches; meet at Kaler’s Pond parking lot for this 1-1/2 hour walk (north side of Montauk Highway, east of Belleview Ave., Center Moriches); bring liquid.


Sun. Jan. 19 – WINTER IN THE WANTAGH GREENWAY:

11:00 AM – 3-4 miles – easy – flat – Info: Rich or Lisa, .

Take a mid-winter stroll through the woods and along the ponds and wetlands of portions of our proposed new Greenbelt trail system in the 800-acre Wantagh Greenway; the diversity and beauty of this long-hidden area will surprise you; children over 8 welcome; park on north side of Merrick Road near gazebo in Mill Pond Park, about ½ mile west of Wantagh Parkway. Hike in Walt Whitman’s footsteps on our beautiful loop in West Hills Park; bring water; rain or snow cancels; from No. St. Parkway. Exit 40, north on NY 110 one mile, left on Old Walt Whitman Rd. (follow signs for Whitman Birthplace), left on West Hills Rd., left on Reservoir Rd. to end; optional: visit nearby Walt Whitman Birthplace after hike (small admission fee).
