Dear Trail Friend,
If you are reading this letter, and logged on to hike-li.org I’m sure that you love hiking and Long Island’s trails. Let me tell you more about Southampton Trails Preservation Society (STPS).
STPS is a 20-year-old organization that advocates for open space within the Town of Southampton, leads weekly hikes, and creates and maintains trails. Here are some statistics:
-
Through July 2006, STPS led 56 hikes
-
534 people hiked with us
-
75% of those hikers are STPS members
-
STPS conducted 30 trail maintenance parties so far this year
-
93 people participated in these work parties
If you’ve hiked with us in the past or hiked Town of Southampton trails alone, you can thank dedicated STPS members who led the hikes and created and maintained the trails.
We are a group of people who love being outdoors, learning about the local flora and fauna, getting exercise and just having fun. We hike Saturdays and Sundays, year round. I enjoy hiking in the winter when the weather is crisp and clear, with the leaves off the trees the vistas are especially beautiful. We also enjoy getting together for a snack or lunch at a local restaurant after some of our hikes. We tell ourselves that we deserve it since we’ve just hiked so many miles!
If you enjoy hiking as much as I do, I encourage you to join us on a hike and become a member of Southampton Trails Preservation Society. While you can get our hike schedule on this website and in the local papers, members also receive the schedule, the minutes of our meetings and our newsletter, Pathfinder, mailed to their homes. In addition, the larger the STPS membership, the greater voice we have with local officials to advocate for open space and trails. If you would like to become a member of STPS, click on the Southampton Trails Preservation Society link within hike-li.org, then on to learn how to join.
I look forward to seeing you on a hike soon!
Sincerely,
Glorian Berk, President
Southampton Trails Preservation Society
