SCHEDULED HIKES
May 2009
Quote of the month
I don’t see why I am always asking for
private, individual, selfish miracles
when every year there are miracles
like white dogwood.

May 2, Saturday 10 A.M. THE WALKING DUNES HIKE - FRONT AND BACK (3.5 miles)
Inspiration for this hike comes from the recent publication of a beautiful book on the Walking Dunes by EHTPS members Mike Bottini and Ruth Formanek. May 9, Saturday 10 A.M. WATERFENCE (5 miles)
This is a vigorous hike through some beautiful landscape. Come join our leader on a walk in Hither Woods. We will follow the Serpent’s Back Trail to the Waterfence shoreline overlooking Napeague Bay. Meet at the Hither Hills West Overlook off Rt. 27, about 1 mile east of the Montauk Highway/Old Montauk Highway split. Leader: Ed Porco
May 13, Wednesday. 9 A.M. EXERCISE HIKE (3-4 miles)
This will be a moderately-paced ‘exercise hike” through a lush beech forest and past a working farm. Meet on Abrahams Path in Western Amagansett about 2/10 mile north of the intersection with Town Lane in East Hampton. Leader: Ethel Pulaski
May 16, Saturday, 9 A.M. BIKE EXPLORATION (20 miles)

May 23, Saturday 10 A.M GHOST TOWN HIKE (4 miles)
Did you know that we have a ghost town in the middle of East Hampton? Join a local historian for a tour of the “town,” now abandoned to dogwoods, pines, and oak trees. Meet at the schoolhouse plaque on Northwest Rd, about 3/10 of a mile from the intersection with Alewive Brook Rd in East Hampton. Leader: Lee Dion
May 24, Sunday 10 A.M. STONY HILL HIKE (8 miles)

After hiking a fairly flat pine and secondary dune area, we will proceed across an access through salt meadows to the shores of Napeague Harbor for a beautiful beach walk. Our trail then continues through the oak/pine forest of Hither Hills. The final ascent of Nominicks Hill will reward us with sweeping views to the south and west. Meet on Napeague Meadow Rd about ½ mile north of the intersection of Rt 27. Leader: Carol Andrews and day of hike cell
May 30, Saturday 10 A.M. HANDS CREEK PRESERVE (2 miles)
This easy 2 miler which many of us have kayaked, is now available for hiking. The former Duke property, which abuts the Boys Harbor parcel, contains rambling woods and a short beach walk with beautiful water views across Three Mile Harbor. This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a new perspective of an old landscape and still have time to enjoy the rest of the day. Meet at the parking area on Springy Banks Rd just south of the intersection with Hands Creek Rd. Leader: Gene Makl
