This month we celebrate the preservation of Hither Woods and observe the annual South Fork Trails Weekend – lots of opportunities for hikers to enjoy our precious natural resources.

October 4, Wednesday 10 A.M.
HISTORIC SPRINGS AND MERRILL LAKE (2.5 miles)

Includes a walk through the Springs historic district, where buildings date back to the 1800s, and a stroll through the Nature Conservancy’s Merrill Lake Sanctuary (often wet), with beautiful views of Accabonac Harbor.  Meet at Ashawagh Hall where Fireplace Rd meets Old Stone Highway. Leader: Nancy Kane  ()

 

October 7, Saturday 10 A.M.
HITHER WOODS (3 OR 6 miles)

Starting off this weekend’s series of Hither Woods celebrations, you can take your pick of a 3-mile jaunt or more ambitious 6-mile hike. Easy to moderate pace.  Meet at the Hither Hills West Overlook on the north side of Rt 27 about one mile east of the split with Old Montauk Highway.  Leaders: Ed Porco () and Richard Lupoletti ()    

 

October 8, Sunday
HITHER WOODS DAY/HIKES AND CELEBRATION

Before the big celebration, hikers have a choice of a big or little warm-up hike through Hither Hills State Park.  Rain date: Monday, October 9, at 9 A.M.   Rick Whalen () will lead a 5-6 mile moderate to brisk paced walk.

 At 10 A.M. there will be a 3- mile loop hike led by Richard Lupoletti (). Both hikes feature beautiful water views.   The meeting place is at the parking lot at the end of Navy Road in Montauk.  Call if you need driving instructions.

Come and celebrate the 20th anniversary of the preservation of Hither Hills—food, music, and memories.

 

October 11, Wednesday 10   A.M.
FARM EXERCISE HIKE (3 miles)

This will be a moderately-paced “exercise hike” through a lush beech forest and past a working farm.  Meet on Abrahams Path in western Amagansett about 2/10 mile north of the intersection with Town Lane in East Hampton.

October 14, Saturday   10 A.M.      POETRY HIKE AT SAMMY’S BEACH (3 miles)

We will stop twice on this shore hike for poetry readings.
BYOP (bring your own poem) written by you or someone else.  Or just come along to enjoy the scene. Meet at the end of Sammy’s Beach off Old House Landing Road, via Alewive Brook Rd. Leaders:  Leeanne Domash and Laurie Adler ()

 

October 18, Wednesday 10 A.M.
GRACE ESTATE HIKE ( 3- 4 miles)

Take a mid-week break to bask in nature’s autumnal glories.  Meet at the schoolhouse plaque on Northwest Rd, about 3/10 of a mile from Alewive Brook Rd intersection.

SOUTH FORK TRAILS WEEKEND

In conjunction with the Southampton Trails Preservation Society October 21, Saturday   10 A.M.
INAUGURAL HIKE AND LUNCH   (4 miles)

Join the Southhampton Trails Preservation Society for a brisk hike on a new section of the Paumanok Path to the East Hampton border and back followed by lunch at the Val Schaftner House, complements of STPS.   Meet at the Val Schaftner House on the east side of the Bridgehampton/Sag Harbor Turnpike just north of Scuttle Hole Rd.

October 22, Sunday   9 A.M .
(Rain date: Sunday Oct 29)
PAUMANOK PATH # 1  (12.5 miles)

This challenging hike is the first leg of a four-part fall/winter reprise of the entire 42 mile East Hampton segment of the Paumanok Path.
Meet at the intersection of Soak Hides Rd and Springy Banks Rd in East Hampton.   Bring lunch, snacks, and liquids.   Participates who complete all four hikes (Oct-Jan) will receive a certificate of achievement.   Leader: Richard Lupoletti

 

October 25,   Wednesday   10 A.M
LILY HILL CEMETERY HIKE (2 miles)

We’ll take a leisurely stroll to an almost forgotten cemetery in Amagansett where some members of the Dominy family (craftsmen of watches, windmills, and fine furniture) are buried. Meet on Spring Close Highway, less than a mile north of the intersection with Rt 27, just north of the LIRR underpass. Leader: Richard Lupoletti   ()

 

October 28 , Saturday 10 A.M.
POINT WOODS AND CAMP HERO (4 miles)

Enjoy the autumn colors on this moderate to fast paced tour of one of Montauk’s best hiking areas.
Meet at Camp Hero Rd, off Rt 27 about 1 mile east of Deep Hollow Ranch in Montauk. Leaders:  Steve and Laurie Tamber  ()

 

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDS SUNDAY.

TURN YOUR CLOCKS BACK

October 29, Sunday 10 A.M.

AMAGANSETT FARM TO BAY HIKE (5-6 miles)

Hike through scenic farmlands and golden beech woods en route to the Bay at Amagansett’s Fresh Pond. Moderate to brisk pace.
Meet at the bayfront parking lot at the end of Fresh Pond Road, Amagansett.
