January 2005 Hikes
Due to hunting season, the Wednesday hikes this month will be held in areas where hunting is not permitted. (Weekends are not affected.) For further information about any of the scheduled hikes, call . The next EHTPS meeting will be held on Monday, January 3, at 7:30 PM in Ashawagh Hall.
January 2, 2005, Sunday 10 A.M. HITHER WOODS RAMBLE (10- 12 miles)
Rick Whalen’s annual first-hike-of-the-year will take place this year the day AFTER New Year’s Day in Montauk’s magnificent Hither Woods. You will see deep oak woods, remote sound front coast, and the beauty that is Montauk in winter. Meet at Hither Hills West Overlook on Rt 27 about 1 mile east of the split with Old Montauk Highway. Bring lunch and liquids, and dress appropriately.

January 5, Wednesday 10 A.M STONY HILL/TOPSIDE & UNDERSIDE (3 miles)
A loop through the Stony Hill area will include trails in the Highpoint Preserve in Amagansett and the Accabonac Preserve, and the old town brush dump (euphemistically referred to as “Accabonac Meadows”) in Springs. Meet at the corner of Accabonac Highway and Stony Hill Road.

January 8, Saturday 10 A.M. CULLODEN – THE GUNNUNK’S GARDEN TRAIL
A short (3 miles), but beautiful hike of the brand-new trail loop at Culloden Point. Meet at the trailhead on the west side of Flamingo Avenue in Montauk, just north of Wills Point Road.

January 9, Sunday 10 A.M. STONY HILL & JACOB’S FARM LOOP (5 – 6 miles)
This outstanding loop includes town, county, and Peconic Land Trust parks and preserves. We will maintain a moderate to brisk pace; bring snacks and liquids. Meet at the Jacob’s Farm trailhead on Red Dirt Road, 200 yards east of the intersection with Accabonic Highway.

Amble past a working farm field into a lush beech forest where the deer and the cantaloupe play. Enjoy the serene and openness of the winter season on one of nature’s better pieces of work. Meet at the road side parking area on Abraham’s Path between Accabonic Road and Town Lane in Amagansett.

A unique and beautiful hike from secluded Steppingstones Pond to the magnificent bluffs and ocean views of Shadmoor State Park. Very varied scenery! Be prepared for muddy conditions if the weather is warm. The pace will be moderate to brisk; bring lunch and liquids. Meet at the intersection of West Lake Drive and Old West Lake Drive in Montauk.

January 19, Wednesday 10 A.M ONCE AROUND THE DOWNS (3 miles)
We are certain not to encounter any hunters on this invigorating road walk around the perimeter of Montauk Downs Golf Course, but we will see many lovely residences including a house with its own faux windmill. Very light traffic and hilly terrain. Meet at the east parking lot at Montauk Downs; follow the signs on Route 27 after passing through town. Eva Moore
January 22, Saturday 10 A.M BIG REED POND (3-4 miles)
Enjoy many beautiful water views of Big Reed Pond, including a Registered Natural Landmark. Meet at the parking area off East Lake Drive, about 2 miles north of the intersection with Rt. 27 in Montauk. Turn right past the sign and follow the dirt road.

January 26, Wednesday 10 A.M. CAMP HERO & MOVEABLE FEAST (3-4 miles)
Natural beauty combined with man-made structures of historical interest make this a unique hiking experience. Meet at Camp Hero Rd in Montauk, a right turn off Rt 27 about 1 mile east of Deep Hollow Ranch. We are invited to the leader’s house at 148 Monroe Drive for coffee and crullers following the hike.

January 29, Saturday 10 A.M. FRESH POND (3 miles)
This pleasant woodsy walk takes us past some historic sites. Meet in the Fresh Pond parking lot at the end of Fresh Pond Rd in Amagansett.

January 30, Sunday 10 A.M. WHITE PINES & THE GRACE ESTATE (6-7 miles)
In this classic winter’s hike, we’ll combine the white pine forest of EH’s Northwest woods, LI’s only native forest of white pine, with the scenic Grace Estate woods on the shore of Northwest Harbor in a moderate paced walk. Bring lunch and liquids. Meet at the intersection of Old Northwest Rd and Northwest Rd.
