October 2, Saturday 10 A.M.                               TWO PINE FORESTS (4.5 miles)           

This new hike in NW will take us through Wilson’s Grove to the new Joshua’s Hole Trail and a second majestic pine forest.  Meet at the intersection of Hands Creek Rd and Van Scoy’s Path West.

October 6, Wednesday   10 A.M.           CAMP HERO TO TURTLE COVE (4 miles)

Natural beauty combined with man-made structures of historical interest make this a unique hiking experience.  Meet at Camp Hero Rd in Montauk, a right turn off Rt 27 about 1 mile east of Deep Hollow Ranch.

October 9,  Saturday 10 A.M.           POETRY HIKE AT SAMMY’S BEACH (3 miles)

We will stop twice on this shore hike for poetry readings.  BYOP (bring your own poem) written by you or someone else.  Or just come along to enjoy the scene. Meet at the end of Sammy’s Beach off Old House Landing Road, via Alewive Brook Rd.

October 10, 10 A.M.                                   PAUMANOK PATH PLUS-- #1  (5 miles)

This hike, the first in a series that will encompass the  Paumanok Path, showcases the pine/beech forest  in secluded Miller’s Ground. Be prepared for a moderately fast pace on hilly terrain. Meet on Rt 114 at Edwards’ Hole Road.

October 13, Wednesday 10 A.M.                   MERRILL LAKE PRESERVE (2-3 miles)

We start with a stroll through the Nature Conservancy’s Merrill Lake Sancturary.  (Wear boots. It may be wet.)  We then explore neighborhood trails in the Springs Woodblock area.  Meet at the Merrill Lake Sanctuary on the eastern side of Springs-Fireplace Rd, just north of Talmage Farm Lane.

October 14, Thursday 10 A.M.                           WEED WATCHERS HIKE (2- 3 miles)

The goal is to complete the charting of invasive plant species in the Hither Woods area that was begun in July. Meet at the Hither Hills West Overlook on Rt 27 about a mile from the split with Old Montauk Highway.

October 16,  Saturday  10 A. M.                             MULVIHILL PRESERVE  (4 miles)

The first of two events marking South Fork Trails Weekend, this hike marks the first year anniversary of the Mulvihill Trail, a moderately hilly trail that goes through a beautiful secluded oak/hickory and beech forest.  Meet at Brick Kiln Road across from Bridge Hill Lane, 3/10 mile north of Scuttlehole Road in Bridgehampton.

October 17, Sunday  10 A.M.        WEST NECK HILL INAUGURAL HIKE (1.5 miles)

South Fork Trails Weekend continues with the grand opening of a brand-new section of the Paumanok Path in Southampton. Come join the festivities!  Meet at Elliston Park on Millstone Brook Rd in SH for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The hike will be followed by refreshments in the park.  Leader:  Laura Smith .

October 17, Sunday  10 A.M.                         PAUMANOK PATH PLUS --#2  (9 miles)  

You’ll see plenty of white pines on this loop hike in EH’s Northwest Woods on this second installment of the Paumanok Path Plus series.  The moderately fast-paced hike features the southerly half of the Northwest Path (to Five Corners). Bring water and snacks.  Meet on Rt 114 at Edwards’ Hole Road

October  20, Wednesday  10 A.M.            NAPEAGUE EXPLORATION (2-3 miles)

The hike leader invites you to help him explore a potential trail loop in Napeague State Park’s dune lands. Some easy bushwacking.  Meet at the dirt road (closed to vehicles) on the ocean south side of  Rt 27,  2.1 miles east of the Bluff Road/Cranberry Hole Road intersection.

October 23, Saturday 10 A.M.                             MONTAUK WATER VIEWS (5 miles)

Enjoy spectacular views of Great Pond, Oyster Pond, and Block Island Sound on this challenging out-and-back hike through scenic eastern Montauk.  Meet at Third House in Theodore Roosevelt County Park off Rt 27.

October 24, Sunday 10 A.M.                         PAUMANOK PATH PLUS-- #3 (13 miles)

Fall foliage and pine needles intermingle on this wide-ranging Paumanok Path tour of the Northwest Woods, from the Grace Estate to the head of Three Mile Harbor. We’ll be hiking at a moderately fast pace. Bring water and snacks.  Meet at the intersection of Old Northwest Rd and Northwest Rd in East Hampton.

October 27, Wednesday 10 A.M.            NAPEAGUE TO FRESH POND (3-4 miles)

This lovely section of the Paumanok Path includes views of Fresh Pond.  Meet at Napeague Harbor Rd.

October 30, Saturday  10 A.M.                              TO THE LIGHTHOUSE  (5-6 miles)

Now is a good time to take a close look at the Cedar Point Lighthouse, which recently received preservation status and, hopefully, will soon be restored to its 1868 brilliance. Meet at the check-in cabin at the entrance to Cedar Point Park in the Northwest. Some beach walking involved. REMEMBER TO TURN BACK YOUR CLOCKS; DST ENDS TONIGHT

October 31, Sunday 10 A.M. EST                   PAUMANOK PATH PLUS--#4 (11 miles)

The route is an out-and-back along the PP from Three Mile Harbor to Stony Hill Woods, including a jaunt through the Jacob’s Farm Preserve.  Bring water and snacks for this moderately fast-paced hike.  Meet at the intersection of Springy Banks Rd and Soak Hides Road in EH. Leader:  Rick Whalen
