This very special of months brings an end to winter and the beginning of spring. What can be more wonderful than the first crocus pushing its way through the snow?

Our members meetings are usually on the first Monday of each month.  We will meet March 4 and April 1 at 7:30 PM at Ashawagh Hall.  For additional hike information call .


Directions to Ashawagh Hall: Travel 3 miles past Daniel’s Hole Road on Montauk HWY/NY-27. Pass Hook Pond after left at light. Turn Left onto N. Main St (just before windmill) 0.6 miles: Proceed under train Trestle: N. Main St. becomes Springs Fireplace Rd (bear right at fork – don’t take Three Mile Harbor Road on your left). After 4 miles, just past School Street on your right by Parsons Place, and just before Old Stone Highway, is Ashawagh Hall. If you pass the entrance to the Nature Conservancy’s Merrill Lake Sanctuary, you have gone too far north.


March 2, Saturday, 10AM: Point Woods (6-7 miles).

Join us on this little bit of everything hike. We will start at Camp Hero and hike Point Woods onto the bluffs, down to Turtle Cove and past the Seal Haulout. If the weather cooperates we may do some beach walking. Meet at Camp Hero Rd.  Bring binoculars.

Directions: Camp Hero Road, the last public road off Route 27 before reaching the Lighthouse. Take Montauk Highway (Route 27) east through Montauk Village, past Theodore Roosevelt County Park, Deep Hollow Ranch, and Oyster Pond overlook (on right). The first right after the overlook is Camp Hero Road (1.5 miles east of the entrance to T. Roosevelt County Park). The trail begins on the right side of Camp Hero Road, 100 yards south of the intersection with Route 27.  State Parks put up a Point Woods trail sign and blazed the short distance to the Paumanok Path.  Park on the road shoulder.


March 6, Wednesday, 9AM: Seal Haulout (2.5 miles)

If conditions are right we will observe these interesting creatures sunning themselves on the rocks. For this, round trip, walk through a Maritime forest, dress warmly against the Block Island Sound winds. Meet at Camp Hero Rd. Bring binoculars.

March 9, Saturday, 10AM: Point Woods (6 miles)

New sections of Point Woods and Turtle Cove make this hike spectacular +. We will hike Point Woods and continue on to Turtle Cove. Meet at Camp Hero Rd.

March 13, Wednesday, 10AM: Split Rock (5-miles)

Enjoy spectacular views from Panorama then visit the famous Lost Boulder and Split Rock on a 5-mile loop. Meet at the Montauk Recycling Center.

Directions: Montauk Recycling Center on the north side of Rt. 27: Take Montauk Highway (Route 27) to the Montauk Recycling Center, two miles east of the Hither Hills overlook and one mile west of Montauk Village. Park on the left side of the recycling center entrance road. The trail begins on the right side of this road, directly across from the parking area. This trail is not part of the Paumanok Path; therefore, it is not marked with the white rectangular blaze. However, it is very easy to follow, and within two-tenths of a mile, it intersects with the marked Paumanok Path.


March 14, Thursday, 10AM: Oyster Pond Ramble (3 miles).

Thrill to four spectacular views of this beautiful pond from county and state parkland. Also included are Cornergate, Hetty's Hole, Ogden Brook Bridge and a bit of Point Woods. Meet on Camp Hero Rd.

March 16, Saturday, 10AM: Jump Trail (4 miles)

This trail will take us into the Northwest Woods as we hike the Jump Trail. We will pass Grassy Hollow on our way into the Grace Estate. Meet at the intersection of Hands Creek Road and Van Scoys Path in East Hampton.

Directions: Intersection with Hands Creek Road and Van Scoy West, in the Northwest: NY-27/Montauk Highway through Wainscott past the east Hampton Airport.  Turn left onto Stephen Hands Path follow it to the end, approx. 2 miles to the intersection with Hands Creek Road.  Turn left and Van Scoy W. will be the second street on your right.


March 17, Sunday, 10AM: Buckskill (3 or 7 miles).

Dual Distance Never far from sight and sound of too much civilization you can still enjoy a peaceful jaunt in a thick oak/pitch pine forest. Walk only the Hardscrabble loop or stay the full course by adding the Airport loop. Meet at the intersection of Rt. 114 and Stephen Hand's Path in East Hampton.

Directions: NY-27/Montauk Highway through Wainscott past the east Hampton Airport.  Turn left onto Stephen Hands Path (north).  Travel 2 miles to intersection with Route 114.


March 20, Wednesday, 10AM: Cedar Point (3 miles)

Enjoy spectacular views from a cliff high above Gardiner's Bay as we walk through the serene hard wood forest of this beautiful county park. Meet in the park off Alewife Brook Rd., in the Northwest section of East Hampton. Continue to the parking area, next to the pavilion, across from the campground.

Directions: On Montauk Highway heading east you will see the Wainscott town sign. Pass Daniels Hole Road (this is the road for the East Hampton Airport.)  Take the next left turn (North) Stephen Hands Path.  Bear left onto Old Northwest Road.  Stay on Old NW RD until you reach Northwest Road.  Make a right onto Northwest Road; take it to the end, then make a left onto Alewive Brook Road.  Make a quick right onto Cedar Point Road.  You are now in the Park.

March 27, Wednesday, 10AM: Waterfence Hike (5-6 miles)

This stunning hike takes us on the Serpent's Back Trail and along the shore to the Waterfence overlooking Napeague Bay. Meet at the Hither Hills overlook parking lot off Rt. 27.

Leader: Ed Porco

Directions: Hither Hills Overlook Parking lot in Montauk off Route 27.  The Overlook is on the north side of the road; about one mile east of Montauk Parkway and Old Montauk Highway split.  It is a large paved lot with two kiosks that usually have free trails maps.


March 30, Saturday, 10AM: Long Pond Greenbelt (4-5 miles).

This lovely hike in Mashashimuet Park in Sag Harbor will take us by Long Pond as well as several other ponds in the park. Meet at the parking lot to Mahashimuet Park.

Directions to Mahashimuet Park: The northern end of the Bridgehampton/Sag Harbor Turnpike in Sag Harbor at the intersection with Jermain Ave.  Heading north it is a hairpin right turn through a white brick entrance.
