East Hampton Trails Preservation Society
Scheduled Hikes February 2001
Bundle up and enjoy these winter hikes. Please note the time of the seal Haul-out hikes; they have been coordinated with low tide, giving us more of an opportunity to see the seals. The next meeting of the EHTPS will be on Monday, March 5, at 7:30 at Ashawagh Hall. For information about the group or about the hikes, feel free to call .
Saturday, February 3, Miller’s Ground / Buckskill, 9:00 AM (3.5 or 7.7 miles).
Scale a minor mountain and visit a precious vernal pool on a challenging hike up Miller’s Ground, or continue on an extra 4.2 mile jaunt of the Buckskill airport loop. Meet on Wainscott Northwest Road (also known as Daniel’s Hole Road) at the power line road, just north of the airport.

Wednesday, February 7, Montauk Moorlands, 10:00 AM (3 miles)
Get a taste of what Montauk looked like for the more than 200 years during which it served as the pasture land for East Hampton, as we walk the moorlands, cliffs and beach below. Meet in the parking lot for Ditch Plains beach, at the end of Ditch Plains Road, south of Route 27, about a mile and a half east of downtown Montauk.

Saturday, February 10, Point Woods, 10:00 AM (3-4 miles)
Experience the spectacular bluffs overlooking the Atlantic, the lush holly, birch, beech and sycamore of Camp Hero on this beautiful trail. Meet on Camp Hero Road in Montauk, a right turn off Route 27 about 1 mile east of Deep Hollow Ranch.

Saturday, February 10, Map & Compass Hike, 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM
Mike Bottini, an EHTPS member and an employee of the Group for the South Fork will instruct us on the use of maps and compasses on this hike. Explore Cedar Point County Park, learn some of the history and ecology of this 600-acre park deep in the Northwest woods of East Hampton. Be prepared for some off-trail hiking while we search for potential trail linkages. Please call the Group for the South Fork at 631- to make a reservation.

Wednesday, February 14, Main Beach Hike, 10:00 AM (3 miles)
On this winter hike we will walk from Main Beach to Georgica Beach, onto Georgica Pond, if weather permits, and return by way of Lily Pond Lane. Dress warmly. Meet at Main Beach in East Hampton.

Saturday, February 17, Hither Woods, 10:00 AM (3 – 4 miles)
Follow the coastal trail through the Old Navy Base and the sand pits around Redmond’s Bend and Rocky Point to the Tarworks. The loop around to the starting point via Old North Road on this walk through the northeast corner of Hither Woods. Meet at the end of Navy Road, by way of Second House Road in Montauk.

Saturday, February 17, Paumanok Path, 9:30 AM (13 miles)
Hike along the beautiful central section on the South Fork. The route features new sections of the Paumanok Path, as well as old favorites. The leader will maintain a steady pace of 3 miles per hour. Meet at the Northwest Schoolhouse plaque on the east side of Northwest Road, about ¼ mile south of the intersection of Northwest Road with Alewife Brook Road, in East Hampton’s Northwest Woods. Bring lunch and liquids.

Wednesday, February 21, Seal Haul - Out, Noon, (2 and a half miles)
If conditions are right, we will observe these interesting creatures sunning themselves on the rocks. For this round trip, walk through Maritime forest, dress warmly against the Block Island Sound winds. Remember to bring binoculars. Meet on Camp Hero Road in Montauk. East of Theodore Roosevelt County Park and Deep Hollow Ranch, continue on Route 27 one mile east of the Oyster Pond Overlook. Head north a short distance on Camp Hero Road and park on the road shoulder. A short unmarked trail on the west side of the road will take us to the Paumanok Path. The Paumanok Path takes you over Montauk Highway and onward to the State Park Seal Haul-Out Trail

Saturday, February 24, Seal Haul - Out, 1:30 PM, (2 and a half miles)

Wednesday, February 28, Southampton Hike, 10:00 AM (3-4 miles)
148 acre parcel of wooded knolls and laurel-filled ravines in the Noyac area. Meet at the kiosk on Deerfield Road opposite the Deerwood Path entrance to North Side Hills.
Beautiful views of Robins Island and Peconic Bay. Explore a mildly rolling terrain and experience a variety of plant and animal life. If you have never walked through a laurel woods, this is an experience you should not miss.
Directions: It is on Deerfield Road just south of Noyac Road. From Montauk Highway, you travel approx. 5 miles north from Watermill on Deerfield Road. It will be on the right side of the road, opposite the North Side Hills entrance. Meet at the Kiosk. Parking on the shoulder of the road.
