East Hampton Trails Preservation Society

Scheduled Hikes July 2000


For the months of July and August, our hikes will be starting at 9:00 AM.  During the summer months, we strongly recommend all hikers carry water and wear clothing that completely covers their legs.  Tick spray is also recommended.  For additional information call .  Pick up T-Shirts, caps and jackets at July 22 & July 29 hikes.  The next monthly meeting will be held on July 10 at Ashawagh Hall, off Springs Fireplace Road.  If you wish to do an unscheduled photography hike contact Marty Meirs at .


Saturday, July 1,  9:00 AM: Springs Hike (2-miles)

Hikers will explore local trails, including one that traverses the newly preserved Marna property in the springs Woodblock area.  We will return to the home of Mitzi and Perry Pazer for post-hike refreshments.  Meet at 130 Talmadge Farm Lane off Springs Fireplace, about ½ mile past the intersection of Old Stone Highway (Ashawagh Hall) on the left.

Sunday, July 2,  9:00 AM: Tanbark Creek Bridge, Work in Progress (3 easy miles)

From Northwest in East Hampton to the southern tip of Three Mile Harbor.  We will traverse oak and pine forests on a section of the Paumanok Path, ending at the nearly complete 160 Tanbark Creek Bridge.  Meet at the intersection of Soak Hides Road and Springy Banks Road, off Three Mile Harbor Road in East Hampton.

Wednesday, July 5,  9:00 AM  Mashomack Nature Hike (3 miles)

A pleasing mix of trail hiking and bird and butterfly watching that includes a 3 mile interpretive walk of the “Yellow Trail” in Mashomack.  An expert will be along to help us identify the many wonders of nature on the trail.  Arrange car pooling with friends (to save on ferry fee) and meet at Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island at 9:00 AM.

Saturday, July 8,  8:00 AM – 10:00 AM: Early AM Paddle

Take this early morning paddle around Accabonac Harbor and be exposed to some history, ecology and plant names.  Contact the hike leader, Mike Bottini at if you need a kayak or canoe.  We will meet at Landing Lane off Old Stone Highway, in Springs.

Saturday, July 15,  9:00AM: Stony Hill (5 miles)

This new loop combines the farm and landfill area of the Paumanok Path; a trail through the Peconic Land Trust’s recently acquired Potter Preserve and picturesque Stony Hill Road.  Meet at the corner of Stony Hill Road and Accabonac Road.  This is in the Springs area in East Hampton.

Saturday July 15,  7:30 PM Walking Dunes at Sunset and Full Moon (1 – 2 miles)

Imagine a beautiful sunset and full moon all taking place on the spectacular Walking Dunes in Montauk.  Our hike leader will share with us why and how the dunes walk.  Flashlights and long pants are suggested.  Meet at the end of Napeague Harbor road just past the Art Barge, off Route 27.

Wednesday, July 19,  9:00 AM Nature Trail (2 miles)

Explore the nature trail all the way to Fifhian Lane.  The return includes a walk through the backyard of a historically prominent house.  Meet at the Nature Preserve on David’s Lane, just west of the intersection with Egypt Lane.

Saturday, July 22,  9:00 AM: Hither Woods (4 – 5 miles)

This stunning Montauk hike takes us along Napeague Bay and past Fresh Pond.  Meet at Hither Hills Overlook parking lot off Route 27 about 1 mile east of Montauk Highway and Old Montauk Highway split.

Wednesday, July26,  9:00 AM: Exercise Hike (3 – 4 miles)

This will be “at your own pace” exercise hike along farmland and through a beautiful beech forest.  Bring water.  Meet on Abrahams Path in western Amagansett about 2/10 mile north of intersection with Town Lane.

Wednesday, July 26,  10:00 AM: A Ride in Springs (10 miles)

Join us as we bicycle leisurely through Springs on a 10 mile scenic route.  Please wear helmet and bring water.  Meet at Ashawagh Hall at the intersection of Springs Fireplace and Old Stone Highway.

Thursday, July 27,  6:00PM – 7:30 PM: PM Paddle

Take a fun paddle through the Goose Creek Maze as the sun sets.  Contact the hike leader Mike Bottini at if you need a canoe or kayak.  Meet at the inlet at Bostwicks restaurant on Gann Road off Three Mile Harbor Road in the Springs.


Saturday, July 29,  9:00 AM: Grace Estate (4-5 miles)

This Hike will delight all lovers of the great outdoors.  Meet at the School House Plaque on Northwest Road about 3/10 of a mile from the intersection of Alewife Brook Road in the Northwest.
