Scheduled Hikes January 2000

This is the EHTPS Board’s opportunity to wish you all a Happy and Healthy Millennium and many more wonderful hikes.  Several of the hikes this month will take advantage of the leafless trees to enable us to see the beautiful views screened all fall.  In anticipation of the winter snow, anyone interested in cross-country skiing contact Ray Hartjen at .

Saturday, January 1, 1:00 P.M.: White Pine Forest

Start the new month, year, century and millennium off with one of our most beautiful hikes.  Experience the grandeur of the most majestic stand of white pines on Long Island.  Meet at the intersection of Northwest Road and Old Northwest Road in East Hampton (3 – 4 miles)

Sunday, January 2, 11:00 A.M.: Annual Hither Woods Hike

This is an all afternoon hike, so please bring lunch and drinks.  This hike will include Laurel Canyon and some other favorites of the hike leader.  Meet at the Hither Hills overlook, one mile east of where old Montauk Highway branches off from Montauk Highway.  Stay on Montauk Hwy.  (About 10 miles)

Wednesday, January 5, 10:00 A.M.: Village Hideaways

Explore the newly extended nature trail all the way to the Fifthian Lane.  The return, via Main Street, includes a walk through the backyard of a historically prominent house.  Meet at the Nature Preserve on David’s Lane, just west of the intersection with Egypt Lane.  (2 miles)

Saturday, January 8, 8:30 A.M.: Paumanok Path, Part 4

This forth and final leg of the complete Paumanok Path trek will include Cornergate Hill views of Block Island Sound and Oyster Pond, the Ogden’s Brook Bridge, beautiful Point Woods, The Atlantic ocean cliffs and Montauk Point.  Bring lunch and liquids.  Meet at the public parking lot at the western edge of downtown Montauk across Route 27 from Second House and Kirk Park.  (10 miles).

Saturday, January 8, 10:00A.M.: Beach, Pond and Neighborhood

This walk includes something for everyone.  Enjoy the winter beach and an exclusive “south of the highway” neighborhood.  Meet at Georgica Beach, near the west end of Lily Pond Lane.  (2+ miles).

Wednesday, January 12, 11:00 A.M.: Grace Estate

Join us on a delightful hike, which is a combination of forest and shoreline.  Meet at the School House plaque on Northwest Road about 3/10 mile from the intersection with Alewife Brook Road in the Northwest. (3 – 4 miles).

Saturday, January 15, 10:00 A.M.: Cedar Point Park

Enjoy spectacular views from a cliff high above Gardener’s Bay as we walk through the serene hard wood forest of a beautiful county park.  Meet at the ranger station just inside the entrance of the park.  On Montauk Highway heading east, you will see the Wainscott town sign. Pass Daniel’s Hole Road (this is the road for the East Hampton Airport.) Take the next left turn (North) Stephen Hands Path; cross over CR 114, then bear left onto Old Northwest Road. Stay on Old NW RD until you reach Northwest Road. Make a right onto Northwest Road; take it to the end, then make a left onto Alewife Brook Road. Make a quick right onto Cedar Point Road. You are now in the Park. Use the Parking lot by the office.  (3 miles).

Sunday, December 19, 10:00 A.M.: Seal Haul Out

On a sunny day, we will observe these interesting creatures sunning themselves on the rocks out on Long Island Sound. For this 2 1/2-mile, round trip, walk through an exquisitely beautiful Maritime forest.  Dress warmly against the Block Island Sound winds. Meet at Camp Hero Rd., a right turn off Rt. 27, about 1.5 miles east of Deep Hollow Ranch. Remember to bring binoculars.

Wednesday, January 19, 10:00 A.M.: Ogden Brook Hike

This wonderful hike will start at Theodore Roosevelt County Park and proceed east, down corner gate, along Oyster Pond, across Ogden Brook Bridge and end at Camp Hero.  Meet on Camp Hero Road in Montauk, a right turn off Route 27, about 1.5 miles east of Deep Hollow Ranch.  (3 – 4 miles).

Saturday, January 22, 10:00 A.M. Nature Trails at Big Reed Pond

Visit two interesting sites of former Montaukett Indian presence in stunning woodland that is being turned into a color-coded self-guided trail system.  Meet at the parking area off Eastlake Drive, about 2 miles north of the intersection with Route 27.  (3 miles).

Wednesday, January 29, 10:00 A.M.: Amagansett / Bell Estate

Learn about Dr. Denistown Bell on a 3+-mile walk that includes a bay beach walk, some road walking and a portion of the George Sid Miller trail.  A woody section has difficult footing and may be wet.  Meet at the end of Barnes Hole Road, off Springs Amagansett Road. (Old Stone Highway).

Saturday, January 29, 10:00 A.M.: Hither Woods

Follow the coastal trail through the old Navy Base around Redmond’s Bend and Rocky Point, then loop around to the starting point using Old North Road on this 3 – 4 mile walk.  Meet at the end of Navy Road.  Coming from the east, pass Hither Hills Overlook, travel 3 miles to Second House Road.  Make a left onto Second House Road and follow it for one mile.  The road will curve but continue travelling straight onto Navy Road.  Cross over railroad tracks, then take the next left and follow this road to its end.

Sunday, January 30, 10:00 A.M.: Buckskill, the Airport Loop

Called the “East Hampton Pine Barrens” this 700 acre pitch pine and scrub oak forest sits atop the largest reserve drinking water supply in town.  Meet on Wainscott NW Road (Daniel’s Hole Road) and the unpaved power line road just north of the airport.  (4 miles).
