Scheduled Hikes February 2000

This month we have planned several invigorating hikes in Montauk so bundle up and be prepared to enjoy yourselves.  In anticipation of the winter snow, anyone interested in cross-country skiing call Ray Hartjen at .  If additional hike information is needed call Ed Porco at .


Wednesday, February 2, 11:00 AM: Barcelona Neck

This hike passes through a preserve of nearly every kind of ecosystem found on the East End.  We will also see two spectacular views of Northwest Harbor from different blowouts through the cliffs.  Meet at the Sag Harbor Golf Course off Rte. 114.

Saturday, February 5, 10:00AM: Miller’s Ground

This very different western end of our town trail system offers pitch pines and scrub oaks, a challenging serpentine ascent, Whale Rock, a vernal waterless pool and a piece of the Paumanok Path.  Meet on Wainscott NW Rd. (Daniel’s Hole Rd.) just north of the airport.

Wednesday, February 9, 10:00AM: Gerard Drive / Movable Feast

Enjoy a beach and road walk with views of both Gardener’s Bay and Accabonac Harbor.  At the end of this beautiful hike, we are all invited to the home of our hike leader where warm goodies will await us.  Take a right off Springs Fireplace Road to Gerard Dr. Meet at the first causeway on Gerard Dr.

Saturday, February 12 10:00 AM: Long Pond Greenbelt

This lovely hike in Mahashimuet Park in Sag Harbor will take us by Long Pond as well as several other ponds in the park.  Meet at the parking lot to the Mahashimuet Park at the intersection of Jermain Ave. and Bridgehampton/Sag Harbor Turnpike in Sag Harbor.

Sunday, February 13, 10:00AM: Atlantic Ocean Beach Walk

What better way to celebrate Valentine’s eve then to renew our love affair with the wild and beautiful ocean beach in deep winter?  If you are up to the challenge, the experience will be nothing short of exhilarating.  Meet at Main Beach in East Hampton.  Approx. two miles east of the Georgica Pond parking lot, you take Ocean Ave. all the way south.  Heading west take James La. to Ocean Ave.

Wednesday, February 16, 10AM: Seal Haul Out

If conditions are right, we will observe these interesting creatures sunning themselves on the rocks.  For this 2.5 mil round trip walk through the forest, dress warmly against the Block Island Sound winds.  Meet at Camp Hero Road, a right off Rte 27, a little over a mile east of Deep Hollow Ranch.  Remember to bring your binoculars.

Saturday, February 19, 10:00AM:  Point Woods Trail

Experience the spectacular bluffs overlooking the Atlantic, the lush holly, birch, beech and sycamore of Camp Hero on this beautiful trail.  Meet at Camp Hero Road, a right off Rte 27, a little over a mile east of Deep Hollow Ranch.

Wednesday, February 23, 10:00AM: Hither Woods

This stunning hike takes us up Serpents Path, to Block Island Sound, along the shore to the water fence overlooking Napeague Bay and past Fresh Pond.  Meet at the Hither Hills overlook parking lot off Rte. 27, about one mile east of Montauk Hwy.  and Old Montauk Hwy.  split.

Saturday, February 26, 10:00 AM: Ogden Brook Hike

Join us on a hike that will start at Theodore Roosevelt Park and proceed east, down corner gate, along Oyster Pond, across Ogden’s Brook Bridge and end at Camp Hero.  Meet at Camp Hero Road, a right off Rte 27, a little over a mile east of Deep Hollow Ranch.
