EAST HAMPTON TRAILS PRESERVATION SOCIETY SCHEDULED HIKES DECEMBER 2000


The Holiday Season is upon us and this is a reminder to make your reservation for our HOLIDAY PARTY, on December 8 at Gurney’s.  Call Jan Keith at .  We hope to see you there.  For information regarding hikes, please call .  For clothing, not yet picked up, you can call .

The next meeting of the EHTPS will be on December 4, at 7:30 PM.

Due to some incidents in the past, we request that all DOGS on hikes be leashed and kept at the rear of the hike.


Saturday, December 2, Sammy’s Beach, 10:00AM (3 miles)

Join us for a walk along the beautiful shoreline of Sammy’s Beach and view Three Mile Harbor wetlands.  Come and see the results of the restoration for yourself.  Meet at the end of Old House Landing Road, via Alewife Brook Road, in the Northwest section of East Hampton.

Wednesday, December 6, Hither Woods, 10:00AM (4 miles)

Enjoy spectacular views from Panorama then visit Lost Boulder and Ram Level on a 4 mile loop.  Complete this beautiful hike at the home of Joan and Ed Porco for refreshments.  Meet at 148 Monroe Drive in Montauk.  Take Rt. 27 to the first right past the Montauk Recycling Center, which is Lincoln Rd. Turn right on Lincoln Road.  Travel two streets, and turn left onto Adam Street then turn right onto Monroe.

Meet at Gurney’s for fun, drink, food and good friends.


Saturday, December 9, Napeague “Walking Dunes” (1 or 3 miles)

On this leisurely stroll you will learn how these mysterious dunes were formed and why they are “walking.”  There will be an optional brisk walk along Napeague Harbor.  Meet at the end of Napeague Harbor Road off Rt. 27.

Sunday, December 10, Paumanok Path, 10:00AM (12 miles)

The conclusion of the Paumanok Path begins along the surprisingly beautiful Parkway Trail, and the new Shadmoor Preserve.  Meet at the State parking lot, upper level, at Montauk Point State Park.

(Note: $5 parking fee at the State parking lot)

Wednesday, December 13, Big Reed Pond, 10:00AM (3-4 miles)

Enjoy many beautiful water views of Big Reed Pond, including a Registered Natural Landmark.  Meet at the parking area off East Lake Drive in Montauk.  Travel two miles north of Rt. 27.  After the yellow Suffolk County Parks sign make a right onto a short dirt road.  After a short distance, you will find a dirt parking lot with a kiosk.

Saturday, December 16, Tanbark Creek Bridge, 10:00AM (3-4 miles)

Visit the new bridge and hear our local historian Charles Squires’ first-hand account of the life at Soak Hides in the “One-Armed” Bennett era.  Meet on Abrahams Path between Accabonac Rd. and Town Lane in East Hampton.

Wednesday, December 20, White Pine Forest, 10:00AM (3 miles)

We will hike at a pace to enable us to appreciate the beauty of this trail.  Meet at the intersection of Old Northwest Rd. and Northwest Rd. in the Northwest area of East Hampton.

Saturday, December 23, Cedar Point Park, 10:00AM (3 miles)

Enjoy spectacular views from a cliff high above Gardener’s Bay as we walk through the serene hard wood forest of a beautiful county park.  Meet at the ranger station just inside the entrance of the park, off Alewife Brook Road, in the Northwest section of East Hampton.

Wednesday, December 27, Shadmoor Preserve, 10:00AM (3 miles)

We will overlook the broad Atlantic with views from the highest oceanfront bluffs on Long Island.  Meet at the Ditch Plains Beach parking area in Montauk.

Saturday, December 30, Highest Point in East Hampton, 10:00AM (4 miles)

Join us as we will hike the highest point in East Hampton Town in the mighty Hither Hills area.  Meet at the Hither Hills Overlook parking lot off Rt. 27, about one mile east of Montauk Highway and Old Montauk Highway intersection.
