INSTANT COMMUNICATION

My Primary goal in building this website is to allow more people to appreciate the value of the remaining open space on Long Island. I think that large numbers of people could enjoy this island’s natural beauty if they were informed as to what we have and where to go to enjoy it.

-I believe that once people are exposed to the unique beauty to be found in Long Island’s parks and open spaces they will be more motivated to work to save and protect it. The majority has consistently voted in favor of most of the environmental initiatives. Many of the local political candidates see this fact and are including environmental initiatives on their campaign platforms. The fact that protecting our environment is a concept that most people consistently vote in favor of makes me feel certain that once they have become intimate with this island’s natural charms they will realize the necessity of taking a more active role as its stewards.

-This is the most important function of the hiking groups. I have spoken to many of the influential figures in the hiking community and the one goal they all have in common is the drive to introduce people to this island’s awesome beauty and to educate them on how to experience it in a gentle and respectful manner.

-I hike an average of 100 miles of Long Island's trail every week. I see first hand that the damage, abuse and exploitation is accelerating. I feel an urgent pressure to do something to preserve and bolster the gains we have achieved. I am hoping that all the hiking concerns can meet in this one place in cyberspace to evolve a united effort to celebrate and protect the natural island.

-I have some ideas of what a coalition of hiking groups could achieve. I would be interested in some brainstorming on this subject in particular, and any other related concerns. If you wish to share your views with others, or see what other people’s thoughts are, visit my “Discussion” page. If you want to put together an extemporaneous hike or announce an upcoming hiking or environmental event that would also be welcome on the “Discussion” page.
